Investing in Journalism to Strengthen California’s Democracy
The California Journalism Philanthropy Summit was launched by Dr. Paulette Brown-Hinds as part of her JSK Senior Fellowship at Stanford University, with the vision of bridging journalism and community philanthropy to revitalize California’s local news ecosystem. What began as a conversation among funders and newsroom leaders in 2023 has grown into a statewide movement, now driven by Press Forward California, the League of California Community Foundations, and a broad coalition of partners committed to ensuring journalism remains a vital piece of civic infrastructure. Together, we believe investing in local journalism is investing in democracy.
Why This Matters
Across California, communities face a growing crisis: the decline of local news.
As trusted sources vanish, misinformation spreads, civic engagement declines, and many voices—especially from historically underrepresented communities—go unheard.
Philanthropy has a critical role to play in reversing this trend. By supporting local journalism as a public good, funders can strengthen democracy, increase accountability, and ensure that people in all parts of California—from rural towns to urban neighborhoods—have access to accurate, relevant information.
The California Journalism Philanthropy Summit is a space for leaders in philanthropy, media, and community organizations to come together, share strategies, and align efforts to support inclusive, sustainable, and responsive local journalism.
